"Into the Bluegrass: Longrifles of the Kentucky Frontier"
Art Show, History/Science

The Jack Jouett House Historic Site in Versailles will host an exhibit of Kentucky-made longrifles and powder horns on Saturday, April 20. “Into the Bluegrass: Longrifles of the Kentucky Frontier” will feature a variety of guns made by Central Kentucky artisans in the late 18th and early 19th century from two private collections.
“Central Kentucky in the early 19th century was a cosmopolitan region,” said Mel Stewart Hankla, noted researcher, lecturer and exhibitor of Kentucky longrifles. “The silver, furniture, and art produced by Central Kentucky artisans rivaled that produced in Boston, Philadelphia and New York. The same is true of the artistry of Kentucky longrifles and powder horns.” While rifles and their accessory powder horns were a necessity and not a luxury in frontier Kentucky, their makers nevertheless produced artistic guns with beautiful engraving and flawless wood-working.
The Lexington rifle was uniquely Kentucky, with distinctive patchboxes and trigger guards of exquisite design. The exhibit will also feature powder horns made by members of the Tansel family from Georgetown, Kentucky.
The exhibit will be open in the Jack Jouett House from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. At 1 p.m., Mel Stewart Hankla will give a presentation on the collection in the Visitor’s Center. Space is limited, so tickets to the exhibit and program are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Tickets are $5.00 per person, cash, check or PayPal only. Tickets may be purchased by calling the Jack Jouett House Historic Site at 859-873-7902, or in person at the Jack Jouett House Historic Site. The Jack Jouett House Historic Site is located at 255 Craig’s Creek Road, Versailles, KY 40383. Additional information is at or at Jack Jouett House Historic Site on Facebook. The Jack Jouett House Historic Site is operated by Woodford County Fiscal Court, in cooperation with the Woodford County Heritage Committee.
