Over the past decade, there has been an increasing appreciation and enthusiasm for Thai food. And I've many times wondered why there hasn't been a similar surge in interest for other Southeast Asian cuisines--especially the amazing cuisine of Vietnam. Now, finally, we have two good Vietnamese restaurants in Lexington, and I strongly urge readers to visit Pho BC. It has a diverse menu of vermicelli noodle dishes ("bun" pronounced "Boone") and broth dishes ("pho" pronounced "fuh"). Plus, you should treat yourself to a glass of Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk ("ca phe sua" pronounced "cafe sue-uh"). Get it iced. You'll be happy to drink it. The whole experience will cost you about ten bucks, and you'll leave full, and you will have expanded your culinary horizons.
I went to Pho BC last night--the space is a big improvement over the restaurant that was there before in terms of appearance and atmosphere.
My spouse and I started with the pork roll ($2.95 for 2). Good, not spectacular, but served with a tasty sweet & sour dipping sauce.
I chose Steak and Meatball Pho from the list of about 20 different pho options.
It came in a giant bowl, with basil, hot peppers, and sprouts on the side. Plenty of tender, tasty meat, and very good over all ($7.95).
My spouse had Chicken fried rice, served with egg Flower Soup. The soup had a good, unique flavor, different from typical egg drop. The rice was characteristically sweet Vietnamese stir-fried, with tender, seasoned chunks of chicken, and very good. (about $7)
Overall, Pho BC was a good find, and we will be back there soon. It is a great value, in a nice setting (not luxurious, but nice).

What's in a name? In the case of Pho BC, a new Vietnamese restaurant on Lexington's southside, there is more to it than meets the ear. Pho is the famous beef soup of Vietnam, probably its national dish. But for the longest time, maybe since I first tried it 20 years ago, I've been mispronouncing it. I was told it's pronounced "foe." But a Vietnamese native and colleague told me otherwise. Pho is a two-syllable word and is pronounced "fuh-UH." Who'd have thunk. And another thing I learned: Pho BC isn't faux, it's the real deal.
