The company

This production of The Little Foxes marks the debut of On the Verge, an informal alliance of seasoned practitioners including Margo Buchanan, Trish Clark, Alberta Labrillazo, Ave Lawyer, Joan Rue, Janet Scott and Lisa Thomas. The group plans to explore challenging work and create untraditional experiences both for theatre aficionados and for those who would rather be mugged than attend a play. Predicated on audience response to The Little Foxes, the group hopes to revive it in May 2009, while staging its prequel, Another Part of the Forest.

The play

Set in a small Southern town in 1900, Lillian Hellmans classic drama, The Little Foxes is the story of Ben and Oscar Hubbard and their married sister, Regina. These are the new American entrepreneurs-- unscrupulous, crass and mercenary-- willing to steal from their customers, destroy their town and sacrifice the environment in pursuit of a fortune. Ben and Oscar, desperate to invest in a cotton mill that, they hope, will make their fortunes, need to raise capital from their ailing brother-in-law, Horace Giddens. Horace's reluctance sets of a chain of events that threatens to exclude Regina from the family windfall but which she finally turns to her advantage.
The playwright

Lillian Hellman, a powerful political voice in the 30s and 40s, was dogged in her stance against abuse at high levels and was herself a victim of blacklisting for her Communist ties during the McCarthy era. In The Little Foxes she writes from the personal but moves seamlessly into the public and political, making such a shift seem natural and inevitable. By the end of the play we are well aware of the societal destruction wreaked upon the many by the few who would hold power over the rest.
