Born in Urbana, Illinois on February 19 1971, Violinist Gil Shaham began taking violin lessons from Samuel Bernstein at the Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem when he was seven. In 1980, when he was nine years old, he attended the Aspen Music School in Colorado.
